The study highlights the need not only to develop harmonized and verifiable procedures but also indicators for measuring effectiveness and success and for comparing between interventions and countries. EU policies are recommended to provide a set of indicators that may be measured consistently and regularly in all countries. Furthermore, public information campaigns should be accompanied by other interventions, as evaluations may show an impact on awareness and intention, but rarely on consumption patterns and health outcome........... Today, it affects as many as 1/3 of Americans and is the leading form of liver disease in the United States. Worse yet, it shows no signs of slowing down and threatens to overwhelm liver transplant programs in the coming decade. According to Dr. Michael Curry, a hepatologist at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, about 8. In the other 2. 0%, the condition will progress to non alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and about 2. NASH patients will progress to liver cirrhosis and end stage liver disease. In the United States that means as many as 6 million people could be looking for liver transplants in the near future. The fatty liver epidemic is a silent, but very real threat to the health of many Americans and one Dr. Curry believes could overwhelm liver transplant programs and create a situation where we’re simply unable to treat so many patients. But non alcoholic fatty liver disease isn’t just an American problem. Recent reports out of England, Malaysia, and other countries show similar signs that fatty liver could quickly become a worldwide epidemic. Let’s take a closer look at the disease. They termed this condition alcoholic fatty liver disease. While it’s true excessive alcohol consumption CAN and DOES cause liver damage, doctors soon realized there was something else going on when they started seeing patients with the same signs of liver damage, but who had no history of alcoholism. This condition soon became known as non alcoholic fatty liver disease. Put simply, non alcoholic fatty liver disease is the accumulation of fat (triglycerides) in liver cells due to non- alcohol related causes that can eventually lead to liver inflammation, liver scarring, liver cancer, complete liver failure, and death. Some of the contributing factors to fatty liver disease include obesity, type II diabetes (diabetes mellitus), metabolic syndrome, high fat, high fructose, and high glycemic diets coupled with a sedentary lifestyle, hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, medications and toxins, and insulin resistance. Non alcoholic fatty liver disease generally progresses through the following stages: Simple steatosis (fatty liver)Fatty liver with inflammation (non alcoholic steatohepatitis, NASH)Fatty liver with liver hardening and liver scarring (liver cirrhosis)Liver cancer and/or complete liver failure. Death unless a liver transplant is performed. When too much fat accumulates in the liver, it clogs the spaces surrounding hepatocytes (liver cells), causes the liver to become larger and heavier, impairs the livers ability to filter toxins and other harmful substances from the blood, and reduces its ability to metabolize fats. The earliest stage of fatty liver disease, simple steatosis, is usually easily reversed by dietary and lifestyle changes. However, as liver damage becomes more severe, it can lead to cell death and scarring (liver cirrhosis), at which point it often becomes irreversible and requires a liver transplant to save the life of the patient. Why is non alcoholic fatty liver disease so dangerous? Fatty liver disease is closely associated with obesity and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, two- thirds of Americans are either overweight or obese. This means it’s a very real threat for almost everyone. The disease is so dangerous because it is what the National Institutes of Health refers to as a “silent disease”. Non alcoholic fatty liver disease develops over a long period of time, but many people experience few, if any, symptoms until the condition worsens to non alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) or cirrhosis. Some people may experience a dull or aching pain on the right side of their abdomen, but most don’t. This pain is generally associated with the liver growing larger due to inflammation and stretching the lining of the liver or pressing against other organs. Other fatty liver symptoms include a swollen stomach or ankles, vomiting blood, general fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, and jaundice. Since the condition has few symptoms, it sneaks up on you and many people fail to seek fatty liver disease treatment early on when the condition is often reversible through a proper fatty liver diet and exercise. The Fatty Liver Diet Guide can show you exactly which foods to eat and which to avoid if you have a fatty liver and provides precise fatty liver diet plans and even fatty liver diet recipes for those who want to be proactive at slowing and reversing the condition before it becomes untreatable. To make matters worse, doctors can easily miss the disease even with the help of ultrasounds and CT scans, and even tests for elevated liver enzymes in the bloodstream aren’t 1. Many times the disease is first noticed during routine checkups or during blood tests for other conditions. A liver biopsy is the best way to get a definitive diagnosis. Annual checkups with your doctor are important to help increase the chance a fatty liver is caught early. If left untreated, NAFLD can bring about much more severe symptoms including brain changes (hepatic encephalopathy) that result from harmful toxins reaching the brain. A healthy liver filters these toxins from the blood so they never reach the brain. A damaged liver is unable to do so which can result in things like memory lapses, trouble sleeping, lack of coordination and balance, and damage to other organs of the body. These more severe fatty liver disease symptoms can often be rather alarming. For example, hepatologists such as Dr. Kevin Mullen from the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and Dr. Michael Curry from the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston report seeing patients who have: Exhibited symptoms very similar to Alzheimer’s and dementia. Mistakenly put their laundry in the refrigerator. Forgotten events that just took place the same day. Found themselves in a scalding hot shower and forgot how to turn it off. Walked around the neighborhood naked. Although seldom talked about, the liver performs over 5. Thus, maintaining liver health should be a primary concern for everyone. Failing to do so is a true death sentence. Who is at risk of getting non alcoholic fatty liver disease? The short answer to this question is: everyone. Fatty liver disease can affect men, women, and children of all ages and nationalities. It is most commonly found in people who suffer from type II diabetes and those who are overweight and/or obese (particularly around the mid section). A recent study out of England suggests as many as 5. A poor diet coupled with a lack of exercise are the leading culprits. Some experts believe non alcoholic fatty liver disease will become a silent killer for this generation of children if the obesity epidemic is not kept under control. Most experts also agree that the biggest risk factor to developing non alcoholic fatty liver disease is being overweight. This is true for both children and adults. How to treat non alcoholic fatty liver disease. Currently there is no single fatty liver treatment for ridding the body of non alcoholic fatty liver disease. However, if you suffer from a fatty liver or feel you are at risk of developing fatty liver disease, then here are a few guidelines you should follow to help prevent and reverse the condition: Lose weight gradually and keep it off long- term. Stay away from fad diet programs that recommend starvation diets or extreme gastric bypass surgeries that can actually further exasperate a fatty liver. Instead, try programs like Fat Loss Factor and Paleo Burn to target fat in your mid section. Stay active and exercise at least 3. Recent studies show resistance exercises can help improve a fatty liver and may be easier for people who are overweight and/or obese because they put less demand on the cardio- respiratory system. Make dietary changes that limit fat consumption to less than 3. Be cautious of generalized diet advice such as “eat more fruits and vegetables” as some fruits (particularly those containing large amounts of fructose) can be harmful for people with non alcoholic fatty liver disease. See the Fatty Liver Diet Guide and Fatty Liver Bible for specific diet plans and foods that can be used to reduce liver fat and improve fatty liver disease. Smaller, frequent meals are often better than large feasts for fatty liver patients. Antioxidants such as silymarin (found in milk thistle) and vitamins C and E can help improve liver health when taken in the right ratios and dosages. Don’t miss annual health checkups and stay in touch with your doctor on a regular basis. These are important for catching fatty liver disease early and giving you the best chance of beating the disease before it progresses to liver cirrhosis or liver cancer. Reduce strain on the liver by treating related conditions such as type II diabetes and hypertension. Most importantly, if you’re overweight chances are you already have a fatty liver or will develop a fatty liver in the near future. Be proactive in treating non alcoholic fatty liver disease early on and don’t wait for it to worsen before you take action. By then it may already be too late. ![]() I decided my target paces the next day would be 4:50/km to warm up and 4:10/km for the tempo run (between my 10 mile and HM paces). These nodules can join together, forming larger nodules that interfere with normal body functions such as breathing. Sarcoidosis almost always involves the lungs, but it can also affect the skin, eyes, nose, muscles, heart, liver, spleen, bowel, kidney, testes, nerves, lymph nodes, joints, and brain. Granulomas in the lungs can cause narrowing of the airways and inflammation and scarring (fibrosis) of lung tissue. SARCOIDOSIS CAUSESThe cause of sarcoidosis is not known. One theory suggests that it develops when a genetically susceptible person is exposed to specific environmental agents. Although the specific agents are unknown, several organisms, including viruses and bacteria, have been suggested as possible causes. Noninfectious chemicals in the environment, including beryllium, aluminum, and zirconium, can cause lung disease that has features similar to sarcoidosis. SARCOIDOSIS RISK FACTORSSarcoidosis occurs throughout the world, affecting both sexes and all races and ages. It is most commonly found in people between 2. In a small percentage of cases, more than one family member is affected. Black people are three to four times more likely to have sarcoidosis, and may have more severe disease than people who are Caucasian. Sarcoidosis rarely occurs in children. SARCOIDOSIS SIGNS AND SYMPTOMSSarcoidosis frequently causes mild symptoms and resolves on its own. Information about sarcoidosis and symptoms of the skin, nervous system, heart, bones, kidneys and other symptoms. In addition to the lungs and lymph nodes, the body organs more likely than others to be affected by sarcoidosis are the liver, skin, heart, nervous system, and. Sarcoidosis is a disorder that causes tiny nodules (granulomas) of inflamed tissue to develop in the body's organs. These nodules can join together, forming larger. The most common symptoms of lung involvement are cough, shortness of breath, and chest pain. The chest pain is usually no more than a vague tightness of the chest, but can occasionally be severe and similar to the pain of a heart attack. Affected individuals may also experience fatigue, weakness, fever, and weight loss. In approximately half of all patients, the condition is detected before any symptoms develop. Other organs in the body can also be affected. The signs and symptoms in these organs depend upon the site and extent of organ involvement (eg, involvement of the lungs can cause breathlessness or coughing). The following organ systems are commonly involved. Skin — Skin lesions of different types can occur on the face, neck, arms, legs, or trunk. These lesions range from subtle, painless rashes to deep scars. People with more severe disease involving the internal organs often have more severe skin lesions. Eyes — Involvement of the eyes can cause inflammation of different eye structures, including the iris, retina, or cornea. Glaucoma, cataracts, and blindness are late complications of untreated sarcoidosis. Because some sarcoidosis- related eye problems do not cause symptoms, it is important that all patients with sarcoidosis have an annual eye evaluation that includes an examination while the eyes are dilated. Kidney — Abnormalities in the way the body handles calcium can occur and, if untreated, it may rarely lead to kidney failure. Small nodules (granulomas) may also develop in the kidney, leading to abnormal kidney function. Patients with sarcoidosis should have kidney function testing (usually with blood and/or urine tests) as part of their initial evaluation and follow up testing. Heart — Nodules may develop in the heart, interfering with its electrical conduction system. This can result in abnormal heart rhythms and even death. An electrocardiogram (also referred to as an ECG or EKG) can generally detect abnormalities in the heart's electrical conduction. Damage and scarring of the lung and lung blood vessels (called pulmonary hypertension) rarely makes it more difficult for the heart to pump blood through the lungs. This condition can lead to failure of the heart's right ventricle. ![]() Nervous system — Neurologic involvement affects approximately 5 percent of patients with sarcoidosis, and may be the first sign of the condition. In the late stages of the disease meningitis, or inflammation of the membranes covering the base of the brain, it can cause impaired function of certain brain structures, including the pituitary gland, in addition to facial weakness or paralysis. The disease may also affect the nerves in the arms and legs, resulting in muscle weakness, numbness or tingling, and pain. Musculoskeletal system — Ten to 1. Reproductive system — Sarcoidosis can affect the male reproductive system, particularly the testes, and may cause male infertility. The disease rarely affects the female reproductive system. Sarcoidosis does not increase the risk of complications during pregnancy; however, the disease may worsen after the birth of the child. Therefore, a chest x- ray is recommended for women with sarcoidosis within six months after delivery. Other organs — Enlargement of lymph nodes, especially those in the chest, occurs frequently. The liver or spleen can also be affected. Involvement of the spleen may lead to anemia and other blood abnormalities. ![]() ![]() SARCOIDOSIS DIAGNOSISSince there is no single test that confirms a diagnosis of sarcoidosis, the diagnosis is based upon multiple factors, including signs and symptoms, abnormalities on chest X- ray (or CT scan), and microscopic examination of one or more specimens from involved tissues or organs. In addition, the diagnostic process often involves tests that help to rule out other conditions, including tuberculosis, which share some features with sarcoidosis. This test is usually recommended to identify a granuloma. Samples can be obtained from lung tissue with a procedure called bronchoscopy. A biopsy may also be done on an affected lymph node, skin nodule, salivary gland, or the tear gland near the eye. This may include imaging tests such as an MRI and/or PET scan to determine if there is evidence of the disease in the eyes, heart, or other organs. ![]()
SARCOIDOSIS TREATMENTBecause the cause of sarcoidosis is not known, there is no specific treatment. Some medications are effective in suppressing symptoms, and these are discussed below. Fortunately, many individuals with sarcoidosis require no treatment since the nodules (granulomas) gradually resolve and leave behind few, if any, signs of inflammation or other complications. There are many questions about the best time to start treatment for sarcoidosis and how long it should be continued. ![]() Treatment is usually recommended in patients with worsening lung problems, especially shortness of breath and cough. Other reasons for treatment include signs of decreased lung function (as determined by pulmonary function testing), or difficulty functioning due to fever, weakness, fatigue, joint pain, nervous system changes, disfiguring skin disease, or disease affecting the upper airway. Sarcoidosis affecting the eyes, heart, or kidneys is treated even when symptoms are mild because of the potentially serious risk of complications when these systems are involved. Current treatment is focused on improving symptoms, suppressing inflammation, reducing the impact of the granulomas, and preventing the development of lung fibrosis. Glucocorticoids — Glucocorticoids (also known as steroids), most commonly prednisone, are particularly effective in reducing inflammation and are typically the first line treatment. In patients with mild disease, such as skin lesions, eye inflammation, or cough, topical glucocorticoid therapy with creams, eye- drops, or inhalers may be sufficient to control the disease. When necessary, oral glucocorticoids are generally taken for 6 to 1. A relatively high dose is usually recommended at first, followed by a slow taper to the lowest effective dose. Relapses may occur after glucocorticoid treatment has ended, although this usually responds to repeated treatment with glucocorticoids. Patients who improve and remain stable for more than one year after glucocorticoid treatment have a low risk of relapse. Symptoms of sarcoidosis, especially cough and shortness of breath, generally improve with glucocorticoid therapy. However, there are potentially serious side effects of long- term glucocorticoids, and the benefits must be weighed against the risks. These include increased appetite, weight gain, acne, fluid retention, trembling, mood swings, and difficulty sleeping. If glucocorticoids are taken for long periods of time, particularly if high doses are used, there is an increased risk of developing diabetes, thinning of the skin, easy bruising, a . Because of the risk of these side effects, most patients are tapered off of glucocorticoids as soon as possible. Researchers continue to examine the role of glucocorticoids in the treatment of sarcoidosis. The biggest question is what effect these drugs have on the long- term course of the disease. Other therapies — Other therapies may be recommended for people who cannot tolerate glucocorticoids, do not respond to glucocorticoids, or want to avoid/reduce glucocorticoid side effects. Here’s are the 5 key points we’re going to cover. Let’s dive in. First, Here’s Why You May Be Struggling With Weight Loss? Maybe you’ve had a similar thought yourself. With that in mind, let’s dive into Step #1.. Step #1: DO NOT start with diet and exercise. One of the biggest mistakes I see guys make when trying to lose weight is that they attack diet and exercise first. This is a SUPER EASY mistake to make, because it seems like diet and exercise would be the . Yet, this is the WRONG first step. Although both diet and exercise are very important (we'll discuss extensively in Steps #3- 5), there are 2 prior foundations that you need to build first. Here are your FIRST two steps.. Foundation #1: Sleep Optimization For Weight Loss. Foundation #2: The Proper Weight Loss Success Mindset. Let's examine these Two Big Foundations now.. Poor Sleep Forces Your Body To Rampantly Store Fat EVEN IF You Are Following A Good Nutrition Plan. During sleep, your body regulates all of its major weight loss hormones. Your body absolutely requires balanced levels of these hormones to lose weight effectively. ![]() Your body absolutely requires balanced levels of these weight loss hormones to lose weight effectively. Here are the most prominent hormones that impact your weight loss.. Growth hormone - a key anti- aging hormone - naturally surges at night to help your body burn fat, build muscle, & repair tissues. Insulin - a key food and fat storage hormone - decreases to its lowest levels at night, enabling your metabolism to burn a ton of fat. Cortisol - your body's main stress hormone - decreases at night allowing your cells to relax and rejuvenate. Key Takeaway #2: Without proper sleep, these critical fat- burning & fat- storing hormones get ALL sorts of messed up - literally forcing your body to hold onto fat. In fact, after a single night of disrupted sleep, your body experiences lower growth hormone, higher cortisol, a slower metabolic rate, and greater insulin resistance (1,2)*. How effective do you think your weight loss efforts will be as you're pushing against this terrible hormonal cascade? Your weight loss progress will flat out suck if you're not getting enough sleep. In fact, a recent study from the University of Chicago showed that people trying to lose weight with inadequate sleep experienced profound MUSCLE LOSS - with little to no fat loss (3)*. That's the exact opposite of result of what you want. For future reading on how to optimize sleep, check out this extensive blog on the 3 best sleep strategies: The 3 Tips To Sleep Better Tonight. Why Diets Fail (Because You're Addicted to Sugar): Science Explains How to End Cravings, Lose Weight, and Get Healthy . Avena Ph.D., John R. Are you tempted to try the Military Diet? X Program, I require 6- 7 hours of sleep as a minimum number. Adequate sleep is the foundation of your weight loss success. Now, let's transition to the second foundation.. ![]() Anyone who says differently is either 1) full of crap or 2) hasn't been through the process themselves. Transforming your health & body requires unwinding the unhealthy lifestyle habits that got you overweight in the first place. I'm talking about your eating patterns, your habits for coping with stress, and your exercise habits (or lack thereof).. We need to shift you AWAY from your bad habits that are keeping you stuck, while also moving TOWARDS the new healthy behaviors that will support your goals. As you can imagine, this degree of health change takes effort. That’s precisely why your successful & sustainable weight loss requires you develop a strong mindset with the emotional fortitude to handle making these healthy changes over the long term. To get more tips on how to improve your mindset for anything you want to tackle, check out this post on the: 5 Navy SEAL Mindset Secrets On Fitness, Success, Manliness, & War. Key Takeaway #3: You need to develop a mindset that is DEEPLY committed fully to your weight loss journey. You need to know what moves you. What drives you. WHY you’re doing what you’re doing. And your WHY has to be deeper than you. When you find your why, you don’t hit snooze any more. When you find you why, you find a way to make it happen. It may be to stay strong to take care of your spouse. I’ve found (in most cases) the strongest “Why Powers” are almost always rooted in something bigger than you or me as individuals. Take a minute now to think about your weight loss ? That's guaranteed. But having the inner strength, commitment, and purpose can always transcend . ![]() That's easy! It is 1. 0x more important than exercise. Know that right off the bat. To illustrate this point, I want to mention one of my Fit Father 3. Day Program members named Vijay. Over the past 4 months on the program, Vijay has dropped 4. Vijay hasn’t performed one single “workout” yet. He also eats bread every single day for lunch. Vijay just follows a simple, effective, and sustainable meal plan we put together that works with his schedule. And he walks during the day. No voodoo involved to drop that 4. And know that when I say “Effective Nutrition,” I’m NOT referring to calorie counting, highly restrictive meal planning, or any of that unnecessary garbage. Because when we trim all the fat & complication away from eating for weight loss, effective nutrition is as much about BEHAVIORS as it is about food itself. That’s worth repeating.. Key Takeaway #4: Eating for weight loss is about sustainable behaviors - not getting caught up in the hype of . It's a behavior- based decision that relies on habits & willpower.. The beautiful part is that you already know which foods are healthy and which aren’t. You know the salmon on the dinner menu is better than the burger. You know chips aren’t as healthy as fruits & veggies. Knowledge is not your issue. Your issue is establishing the right eating habits and behaviors on a consistent basis. The key to your weight loss success lies in finding ways to get those healthy foods into your mouth consistently - ideally in a simple, sustainable, and enjoyable way that doesn’t feel like work or torture. Your success is about building sustainable nutrition habits. Key Takeaway #5: I recommend you start with a simple eating approach like my Free 1- Day Weight Loss Meal Plan that simplifies healthy eating into a sustainable and enjoyable plan. When you download your free meal plan, I'll also send you my VIP . It’s performing fat loss interval training. It’s doing cardio. But.. Remember: exercise is just one TOOL for weight loss. It’s not the foundation of your weight loss efforts. In fact, to lose weight, “formal exercise” it’s the LEAST important part of the pyramid as you see here again.. Please know that I’m NOT saying you can sit on your ass all day and lose weight. We both know that won’t work.. What WILL WORK is understanding that it's 1. NOT EAT 5. 00 calories than it is to spend 1 hour exercising. Key Takeaway #6: you can't out- exercise a bad diet. It's so much more efficient to make some smart changes to your eating than to throw more exercise at a ? That’s why DAILY MOVEMENT is so important. I recommend a simple morning walk if possible - in the sunlight to get some Vitamin D. That’s the ideal plan. If you have an active job already, you're good to go! Your daily activity threshold is already being met, so focusing on starting a smarter nutrition plan will get you the best results. If you work a desk- job AND can’t do a morning walk.. I use this online timer www. Every 5. 0 minutes it beeps on my computer reminding me to get up and move around. Plus, moving around every hour while working really helps alleviate back tension and stiffness. Pro Tip: grab a pedometer & set a daily goal of 7,0. You can buy an inexpensive physical pedometer like this one here or use the free pedometer apps on your phone (Android, i. Phone). Using a Pedometers is a great motivation tool to help you hit your daily movement threshold. Here are a few other tips to move more: Park the car farther away in the parking lot. Take the stairs instead of the escalator. Walk while you are talking on the phone. Hell, even walk your dog, your wife, or your girlfriend : -). As a result, you’ll naturally eat less and lose more weight. Finally, once the activity threshold is in place (coupled with a good diet, ~7 hours sleep, and a strong WHY- motivated mindset), we can address the capstone aspect of the weight loss pyramid: formal exercise.
