In response, European Union (EU) Member States have initiated a variety of national policy interventions to encourage physical activity and healthy eating. However, such interventions have rarely been evaluated in a systematic way. For the first time, a 4 year EU- project (running from April 2. March 2. 01. 3) aims at making an overview of the actions undertaken and identifying gaps, success and failure factors for these campaigns. Its final objective is to provide EU Member States policy makers with best practice guidelines with valuable insights from private sector and communication agencies to develop appropriate policy interventions that will encourage healthy eating across Europe. Professor Bhavani Shankar, leader of EATWELL’s work on the quantitative estimation of diet policy effects, has assessed the effect of a range of policies implemented in Europe. In this podcast, he speaks about his work, sharing some of the results so far and the insights he has gained into the process of dietary policy evaluation. This review provides a classification of public policies to promote healthier eating as well as a structured mapping of existing measures in Europe. Complete coverage of alternative policy types was ensured by complementing the review with a selection of major interventions from outside Europe. Project publishes paper 'Assessment of evaluations made to healthy eating policies in Europe: a review within the EATWELL Project' in Public Health Nutrition. The study highlights the need not only to develop harmonized and verifiable procedures but also indicators for measuring effectiveness and success and for comparing between interventions and countries. EU policies are recommended to provide a set of indicators that may be measured consistently and regularly in all countries. Furthermore, public information campaigns should be accompanied by other interventions, as evaluations may show an impact on awareness and intention, but rarely on consumption patterns and health outcome...........
